Apprenticeships

GHQ Training – Tracey Widows

From a Presentation on employing apprenticeships, given at St. Austell Bay CoC meeting on October 23rd 2014

GHQ Trianing deliver apprenticeships and work based training.

A learner can start and apprenticeship at any age (16-24) and 24plus.

Minimum you have to pay them is £2.70 per hour.

An apprentice should be working for 30 hrs per week, although there can be exceptions if they have a young family etc. Can be reduced to 16hrs per week.

If you have not had an apprentice for last 12mths can be eligible for an age grant £1,500. To be eligible the apprentice learner has to have been working for the employer for a minimum of 12 weeks. Likely, not to be paid that until week 16/17 when it has gone through the checks. The age grant is only for companies with less than 15 employees and can have maximum of 5 apprentices claiming the age grant.

Can put any of existing employees onto an apprenticeship if they want to gain a qualification and can be paid a normal wage. If already working for you, not eligible for the age grant. This is only for businesses taking on new apprentices.

If want to take on an apprentice then approach a training provider or college and ask them to advertise this for you, unless you have someone in mind already.

We don’t charge for advertising the vacancy for you. This will also go through the national matching service.

Once you take an apprentice it normally lasts for 12-24mths depending on the occupation. Exceptions in plumbing, construction, electricians can last a lot longer than 2 years. Most apprenticeships are 12 months.

Apprentices need to take their occupational qualifications e.g. NVQ in retail. If they don’t have Maths and English grades A-C GCSE they will need to take functional skills in Maths, English and possibly ICT.

Apprenticeships can be delivered differently. Through college there is a day release when they go to college and the employer has to pay them for the time they go to training for that day.

If you go to a training provider such as GHQ then we deliver all the training in the work placements and there is no day release. We come out every 2-3 weeks and do training with the learner and all the tests are done online in the workplace.
